Lessons learned by Data Aliens
What if UFOs Learned from Our Data Behaviour?
An alien hovers over a company. Looks through the windows. Takes notes:
- Top floor: two executives playing rock-paper-scissors to settle a strategy decision. Dashboard glowing in the corner. Untouched.
- Middle floor: “I DECIDE.” No data cited. Just seniority and gut feeling.
- Other side: a perfectly built dashboard. Nobody’s looking.
- Bottom floor: a team panicking around a KPI screen. Not because they planned for this. Because they didn’t.
The alien processes his notes.
Conclusion: “OK, so if you have data: DON’T USE IT!!”
Hard to argue with the logic.
This is what “data-driven” actually looks like in most organizations. Decisions by hierarchy. Dashboards for nobody. KPIs only checked when something’s on fire.
The alien isn’t wrong. It just described what it saw.
